As many of you may well know, I’m very passionate about causes that can benefit humanity; this is one such a cause. These deployed women will be given the opportunity to better, not only their lives, but the lives of the people they share every day with. Won’t you please join me in this effort to help.

Below is the press release. I will personally deliver your names to this event. If you would like to be a sponsor, please have your donations in ASAP; the program will be printed March 1st and we want to make sure you are included.

Our philanthropy objectives:

AN EVENING OF ARTS AND FASHION–A Philanthropic Event

1) To raise funds for a select group of military women enrolled online who selflessly serve their country to provide them with laptops so that they can stay connected with their families while continuing their education; 2) Provide funds to the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma to help support single Moms who are pursuing college degrees.

An Evening of Arts and Fashion

To Benefit Women in the Military

and the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma

(STILLWATER, Okla. Jan. 25, 2012) – Technology has not only changed the way we do business, it has allowed military personnel to continue their education online and stay in touch with their families while deployed. Numerous others, such as single parents, also elect to continue their education online.

Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business has nationally recognized accredited distance education programs that provide online course and degree options, but funding and technology for individuals interested in enrolling online often become obstacles.

ConocoPhillips, corporate sponsor for Oklahoma State University’s student chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), provides funding for programs and activities that have helped AAUW become one of the most successful new organizations on the OSU campus. The women of this distinguished organization are focused on “breaking through barriers for women and girls” in all aspects of life.

As such, they aspire to be women of philanthropic service and leadership. With this goal in mind, AAUW will host its first annual philanthropic event, An Evening of Arts and Fashion, on March 16 in the ConocoPhillips Alumni Center Click Hall on the Oklahoma State University campus.

This event will be a formal evening of arts and fashion, including dinner and wine; ballet, tap, and opera performances, and a runway show with fashion created by world-renowned designer Stella Thomas. Her work was recently featured in the Miami Art Basel, she won the 2010 Dallas Designers Display Competition, which then took her to the Couture Competition in New York City, and her fashion designs will be modeled in the upcoming Ferrari campaign. Throughout her career, she has designed for international royalty and superstars such as Jada Smith, Jimmy Choo and many others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDARbIyq6lY

Opening the show on March 16 will be Betty Thompson, Miss Oklahoma and first runner-up in the recent Miss America pageant. Stella’s sensational designs will be worn during the show by models from OSU and the surrounding area.

This event will generate funds to support two philanthropies: 1) military women, who along with their families continue to selflessly serve and sacrifice, by using the funds to provide laptop computers, and 2) providing funds for a program supported by the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma which helps single moms continue their college education.

“Helping our military women stay connected with their families and continue their education is our way to give back to those who give to all of us by serving our nation,” said Jeretta Horn Nord, co-advisor of AAUW and a professor of Management Science and Information Systems in the Spears School of Business who holds the Jeanine Rhea – Oklahoma International Women’s Foundation Professorship.

“Children are our future and we believe that positive role models and support provided by parental education is the solution to a better tomorrow,” said Nord, who says that OSU’s AAUW chapter is also contributing funds to the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma.

AAUW is looking for sponsorships from individuals and organizations to generate funds for the selected philanthropies. The opportunities for supporting these philanthropies and enjoying an unforgettable evening are listed below:

Corporate Table Sponsorship: $2,000

Includes a table for 10 with preferred seating, a full-page ad in the program, and recognition during the event.

Table for Military Cadets and Officers: $1,000

OSU’s military cadets and officers will open the show in dress uniform. Sponsors for two tables (20 individuals) are needed so that the event has a military presence and they can enjoy the event.

Table Sponsor for 10: $1,000

Company or individual’s name listed in program.

Individual Seat: $100 each

Silent Auction Donation(s)

Donation(s) and name/company name listed in program.

I really wanted to share this with you all because I know that many of you have great ideas and concepts that you would love to see come to fruition. The lack of money always seems to get in our way when we want to move forward; but just can’t, there never seems to be enough. Over the years I have heard mane ‘buts and ifs that turn into excuses for not succeeding. All of you that know me, know that I’m always moving forward with a ‘if there’s a will there’s a way’ mind set. I do not do negative.

Funding platforms are amazing in that you do not have to pay the money back. If you have a compelling story that the people on these platforms belive in, they will help you get to your goal. These are not jokes or scams; the people that donate really do care and do want to help you along.

For all of you who want to take that next exciting step forward you need to check this site out. www.indiegogo.com. There are so many ways you can bring your talent or gift to the public arena (start your own business), and this is a site that can get you moving. You do not have to pay any of the money back; people who believe in you and your business or venture give you the money to get you to the end result.

I hope this helps you, and I would love to hear your story of success.

Cheers,

Jo

I wanted to share this story with you all. We cannot help the circumstances that we are born into, but we can make a change as we grow. This is a story of one of those women, making a change for her and her family. This is also, not only Candida’s story, but the story of many women around the globe. We can help give them a voice by supporting them and helping them through the purchases of their coffee.

Be inspired………..Cheers, Jo

The Silent Voice of Women

My name is Candida Gomez, I live in the Cauca Region of Colombia and I am a coffee producer. My farm is very small, only 2 acres and I work very hard to produce excellent quality coffee. But I also work very hard to take care of my home, and my family. In our cooperative 30% of us are women who are the sole supporters of our families. Many of our husbands have been murdered by the guerrillas who are angry that we want to grow coffee and not the coca drug. My message is this: “We as women work very hard, those of us who have husbands, get up early in the mornings before our husbands and go to bed after them. If we are the only support for our family, we live in constant fear our children will starve, if we cannot support them with the coffee. We work the farms, but our voices are never heard, not in our homes, not in our communities, no in our cooperatives, and not in the coffee industry. We live in silence, no one hears us, no one sees, us, no one knows the work we do, no one gives value to our lives, and no one knows the pain we suffer, or hears our fear. What we want is not very much, what we want is for our voices to be heard, and to be given respect for the work we do and what we contribute to those who buy, sell and consume the fruit of our farms and the work of our hands.

The estimated number of small coffee producers working farms of 1-5 acres is 25 million. These producers account for 65-70% of the worlds coffee production. Through our work in coffee producing countries for the past 16 years, working with small farmers, we have learned that approximately 30 percent of these small producers are women. And of these women coffee producers, 30% of them are women heads of household. They are women who, for the most part, have been abandoned or are widowed. Not surprising, these figures have been consistent in every country we visit. You cannot understand who is really working the farm until you actually go out to the farms and observe the day to day work that is being done and in the processing plants. In these communities, sitting at a table with the boards of the cooperative, you will sit with a table of men only.

Today, we talk not only with the men, but we insist on meeting with the women too. We want to hear their voices. What they want to tell us everywhere we travel is that their husbands are receiving all of the income from the sales of her coffee. That for all of her work, she never sees a penny of the income and that she has no voice in how the family income is used. That her daughter cannot go to school because, if there is any extra income, it is invested in the sons only. That she is 70% more illiterate then her son or husband. That she marries at 12-16 years of age, and has on average 4-5 children. These women would tell you that 50-75 % of them are abused by physical violence, rape, and emotional abuse and that this is an everyday part of the culture of the rural coffee community. And finally, they would tell you they receive no respect at all because they are considered to have no value in life, except to bear children.

Educating our industry about this situation is the first step in helping support these women producers. Finding ways through coffee and other means to provide respect and support for these women, stopping the generations of silence from women coffee producers and giving them voice, should be a mission for our industry to look to for the next year and for the years to come.

I’m very blessed to be in the business I’m in, and these women that I support in Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico have been very blessed by my customers. For me, life is about being where I can most benefit the people that I come in contact with. Whether it’s my awesome friends or humanitarian causes; I want to make a positive difference in these lives that I touch.

The women and children in ND also benefit from the coffee growers I do business with. That is so huge if you pause to think about it; a woman coffee grower in Guatemala, for example, is helping a woman in ND. I appreciate each and every one of you, my customers, for believing in my causes and your loyalty to MoJo Roast; without you, none of this would be possible, for that, I thank you.

Cheers,
Jo

Read the story below and see how I have tied women together in the world.

The Story of Café Femenino Peru

The Café Femenino® story in Peru continues to be an inspiration to all of us at Organic Products Trading Company. When we first started this project in 2004 with 464 women coffee producers, we were not sure what the reactions to this concept would by either roasters or consumers. But we did understand that this was truly a ground breaking initiative and that we were compelled to move forward with it. For our company, there was no question that Café Femenino was a very important project with global implications.

What we could not predict was if the market accept the product and if all of our efforts would help these women coffee producers? Today we can answer many of these questions, and in all cases the answer is a resounding, yes!

For the past three summers we have visited with the women coffee producers in Peru, traveling to many of these remote communities and learning about their lives and the effects that Café Femenino is having on their lives. For the past three years in July they have held the Annual Encounter of the Women of the CECANOR Cooperative. Each year we have been able to observe the personal growth of these women.

In the first meeting we participated, which coincided with the first production year of Café Femenino, we shared with them the final version of the Café Femenino logo that we had collaborated on, and we talked about each of our expectations and our commitments to each other to insure the success of Café Femenino. As the women spoke they hung their heads or hid their faces when speaking, they seemed fearful and unsure of themselves. But in their eyes I could see hope. Many of the women had their children with them for there was no one who helped them with their care.

In the second years meeting one of the glaring differences was the absence of their children. I asked them where their children were, and their response was quite simply, amazing. They told me their children were home and their husbands were taking care of them, as they were attending a business meeting! I knew this was huge progress in just one year by gaining the support of their husbands. Their demeanor had changed also, though they were hesitant to share with me when I asked how Café Femenino was affecting their lives. After the first hand was raised to talk to me, hands around the room began to wave. Everyone was excited to share with me their successes. The women told me that with Café Femenino they felt like for the first time in their lives they had some control over their lives. They told it was the first time in their lives that they had ever had any money of their own. They told me that their husbands were supporting them and they were supporting each other. For me the tears of joy and hope rolled down my face. It was possible, we were changing lives and families and communities. I felt so proud of these brave and pioneering women. They were my inspiration, my shining lights.

But the year 2006 brought yet even more profound changes. The group of women coffee producers now had grown to 755 women producers. One of the things the women love the most about Café Femenino was the meetings and the relationships they were now developing with other women. Relationships with other women never existed before Café Femenino, but in 2006 190 meetings were held with the women to provide capacity building activities that they did together. Café Femenino was the program that dreams were built on and of. In this year the women had grown even more. The shy but hopeful women of one year ago had grown to women of purpose and vision, women who were now becoming dynamic with voices that would be heard. In each of their zonal organizations they had developed rudimentary business plans. Ideas they shared with us of how they could grow even more, creating more opportunities for themselves through thoughtful and creative planning. Some of their ideas were to begin small animal breeding projects and seed projects, that in time, would help feed their families, improve their health and provide additional income by selling the excess animals and produce into their local markets. They also had a plan to roast and sell their Café Femenino coffee at the larger cities and in the airport in Chiclayo, Peru. Yes, they had a number of ideas, they even brought some of their prototype products that they had created and want to sell to show us. These were not the same women we met only a few years ago; these were women who now knew they had value. These were women who are creating a new generation.

These ideas have been drafted into grant requests that have been submitted to the Café Femenino Foundation, and this past year the foundation has worked and continues to work to raise funds to provide the seed capital to give these women a chance to make their dreams come true. For roasters that are donating a portion of your proceeds to the foundation, these women are so grateful for the opportunities that these funds are providing. Additionally this past year a grant from the foundation was given to these women to provide funds to allow 600 daughters of women producers to go to school. The foundation hopes to be able to continue to supply funds so that for the future girls will also have this opportunity for education.

But for all of the changes that have occurred with the women over the past few years, the most astonishing change is not the changes in the women, but the changes in the men. It is a change that we never expected, and yet in just a short time, we are seeing and hearing the men verbalize their support for the women. The cooperative board of directors told us that Café Femenino is the most important work that they have ever done. The men have acknowledged the abuse they were responsible for and are admitting that they now see the errors in their thinking. Today they tell us how much they value their wives. The women have smiles on their faces and a gentle touch for their husbands, in their own way accepting what was and appreciating what now is and dreaming about what can be in the future.

I’d like to not only, expose you to the world of coffee, but introduce you to women that I think could inspire and lift you up. I have personally met the women and / or had interactions with them before I would recommend them to you. If you are into moving ahead and getting unstuck, these are the women I’d like to acquaint you with. A major point that I’ve experienced with women; is the use of those 2 little destructive words (if and but). If you want to truly move forward in your life and toss the negative use of those words to the curb; these women can help you do that, but, you have to be committed to moving forward and finding that positive vibe that lies within each of us; and only you can find yours. If I can ever help you, please ask; you will not put me out. I would love to hear about your self and business growth.

Here is an amazing list of women that you can feel free to interact with. I personally look forward to a lifelong amazing friendship with all of these women.

Debbie Vinyard is a very positive inspirational woman that I have personally met. She inspires people through her blog and clothing line. Debbie is a cancer survivor and her philosophy is to embrace each day and to find your passion and pursue it.

She is a best friend and an amazing author that uses her platform to inspire and bring a voice to women in business. I actually got to meet a rocket scientist, a woman, and very accomplished at that, because of Jeretta’s book series, A Cup of Cappuccino For The Entrepreneur’s Spirit. I have gotten to meet a lot of very wonderful women beause of Jeretta’s incredible talent with the pen. facebook – http://www.facebook.com/jeretta website – http://www.acupofcappuccino.com/

By June Pagan

Every morning, long before my family awakens, I travel through time. A cup of coffee is my vessel.

On one morning, I travel to RegoPark, in Queens, New York. The year is 1966. I am sitting at the counter of a luncheonette called “The Hamburger Train.” The aroma of fresh brewed coffee wafts throughout the noisy coffee shop, while I await the arrival of my charbroiled burger, which comes to me perched atop a train car called while I wait for my charbroiled burger to reach the station, my burger perched on top of a train car called…

I am too young to drink coffee, but the combination of brew and burger leave a strong olfactory memory impression in a child’s mind. I think to myself, “It doesn’t get better than this.”

On some mornings, I travel to a small airport. My father and I are waiting for the weather to lift so that we can continue on our adventure in his Cessna aircraft. We share cups of coffee and conversation in the airport lounge. We talk about future travels, and, again, I am thinking and I am thinking, “It doesn’t get better than this.”

One recent morning, over a cup of MoJo Roast Viking Thunder, my thoughts transformed me to the top deck of a 100′ motor yacht called “The Islander.” The year is 1989 and we are in a 6″ sea, heading for St. Bart’s from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. I am on caffeine high and feeling the ocean spray on my face. A school ofDolphins kisses the hull as seagulls sing from above. And, once again, I am thinking…. “It doesn’t get better than this.”

This morning, I traveled into the future. It is year 2014 and I am the sleepy CentralCoast town of Los Osos, California. In a bay front cottage, I am sipping MoJo Roast whilst gazing out the bay window that overlooks a bird sanctuary. I catch a glimpse of Morro Rock in the distance. The summer sun plays a dance upon the tall pines. I can year the sound of my husband’s lathe spinning in his workshop; my son is at the water’s edge, walking our bull terrier. And, yes, again, I am thinking… “It doesn’t get better than this.”

And just as I am in the midst of that reverie, I find myself suddenly transformed back to the here and now – gazing out the window of my Marina del Rey kitchen, where I am brewing a fresh pot of coffee to serve with my family’s breakfast. Yes, I am thinking, as the enticingly rich aroma of brewing coffee wafts across the kitchen space, “It doesn’t get better than this.” Thank you, MoJo Roast, for transporting me in time and place – and for being a comforting and reliable companion.

From the very beginning of coffees discovery there have been many negative implications; from religious, being the drink of El Diablo, and the health risks of drinking this risky beverage. In the 1970’s study’s were being done on the health risks of drinking coffee. What wasn’t taken into consideration in these studies was the life style of the people in the study’s themselves. Many of them had already developed bad lifestyle choices, such as drinking and smoking. They of course, were showing the side effects and illnesses of their chosen vices, not from coffee.
Now fast forward to the early 2000’s when science, backed with technology and a better knowledge decided to look more intensely at coffee, not so much if it is good or bad, but what is it. When I started roasting coffee in early 2000 there were only around 400 known compounds, now there are over 2,000. Thanks to modern day science and technology the misnomers of coffee are being uncovered and finally being laid to rest.

So let’s take a look at some of the proven benefits of coffee. With over 19,000 scientific studies done here are some of the findings; If you have a cup of coffee an hour before a workout some studies have shown that your performance can be enhanced by 7%-10%. Coffee consumption has been proven to cut the risk of liver cirrhosis by 80%, to help manage asthma, and in moderation to decrease the risk of developing acute coronary disease. It’s also shown coffee can stop a headache, boost mood, prevent cavities. “Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tom DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for coffee studies. “For most people very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good.” Coffee Science Source; http://coffeescience.org/

Other studies have shown that coffee is an antioxidant powerhouse exceeding green tea. There are about 1,000 antioxidants in the raw form of coffee and after the roasting process 300 more are developed which are unique to coffee alone. There have been three major, long term studies, as well as numerous smaller studies that have confirmed coffees properties for preventing type 2 diabetes. There is a compound found in coffee, methylpyridinium, which boosts blood enzymes widely believed to protect against colon cancer. This compound is not found in the raw coffee, it is developed during the roasting process. All of this is very exciting; to say the least, after all a lot of our medicines are derived from the flora and fauna that Mother Nature provides us.

I can’t give you six pack abs like a personal trainer, but I can drench your palate in mouth watering delicious coffee. Our prices are good too.

I’d like to leave this post with a thought: Ability is an amazing thing and it’s a gift that we are all given. We have the choice to grow and nuture that ability, completely ignore and not tap into our ability, or to throw it in the ditch and misuse it. So here’s to the cup that many of us are so passionate about.
Benefiting Humanity and the world that we live in is my company philosophy. It’s so important to benefit something or someone with the talents that we were given.
